Gavin Fien - Prospect Profile
Kiley McDaniel - ESPN - July 8th: "Fien had arguably the best pure hit/power combo on the summer circuit last year and has grown into plus projections for his raw power along with enough defensive ability to stick at third base. I basically had him ranked here entering the spring based on that and have chosen to leave him here despite a rough spring that has confused scouts."MLB.com - July 1st: "Fien is a 6-foot-3 right-handed hitter with plenty of bat speed who produced consistent line drives against top competition all summer. While he has an unorthodox setup with high hands, he made it work and was always on time, but this spring he had more trouble finding his rhythm and was often late in pulling the trigger at the dish."
Keith Law - The Athletic - July 1st: "At his best, Fien has excellent bat speed and plate discipline to match, rarely whiffing or chasing; in a modest sample last year, he swung at pitches beyond the shadow of the zone just 11 percent of the time. He showed at least 55 power and projected to plus, with such great feel to hit that he seemed like he’d be one of the first high school players selected."
Baseball America - June 25th: "Listed at 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, Fien is a righthanded hitter and a shortstop now who is likely to move to third base or an outfield corner in the future. His swing is unconventional, but it works for him. He has a narrow setup and a high handset with a slight hitch in his swing and a bat path that always looks a bit stiffer than scouts would prefer."
Tyler Jennings - Just Baseball - March 24th: "Fien is a physical specimen with huge offensive upside in the future. He keeps it simple with a balanced stance at the plate with low-effort mechanics and extension through the baseball. There’s a bit of stiffness to his swing, but that hasn’t stopped his offensive output."
Carlos Collazo - Baseball America - March 10th: "He raked all summer, and while he does it with a swing that’s a bit odd, it does work for him. I’m not entirely sure where he profiles best defensively. I would run him out at third to start and see how it goes. But I’m drafting a hit tool with power."
Keith Law - The Athletic - March 4th: "Several scouts have said to me that Fien’s the best prep hitter on the West Coast this year, and he does have a good-looking swing to produce line drives with some eventual power. He’s at shortstop now, big for the position but not a lock to move, with a cannon of arm that would let him slide to third with no problem."
Kiley McDaniel - ESPN - February 21st: "Fien wasn't a workout standout in the summer but hit at every event, leading to scouts taking him seriously as a potential first-rounder. His raw power has progressed and he might stick at third base, which has him projected in the top 10 picks."
