Gunner Hoglund - Prospect Profile

Carlos Collazo - Baseball America - June 18: "Hoglund’s 2021 season came to a premature end when he blew out his pitching elbow in his May 7 start against Texas A&M. His rehab from Tommy John surgery means he’ll be sidelined until midway through 2022, and it likely ended any chance he had of being a top-10 pick."

MLB - June: "Hoglund's stuff plateaued in his first two college seasons, as he showed the same 89-93 mph riding fastball and average breaking ball that he had in high school. His stuff ticked up last fall, however, and he now works at 92-95 for five innings at a time and displays a tighter, harder slider at 84-86."

Prospects Live - May 31: "He mixes in an average changeup that's flashed 55 at times. Like Leiter, velocity held Hoglund off the top of boards heading into 2021, but he's touched 97 this season and has comfortably added a few ticks to his average velo readings across the board."

Prospects Live - Mar. 18: "If there’s anyone that has enjoyed a nice velocity bump, it’s Hoglund. Previously working high-80’s to low-90’s, Hoglund has touched 97 MPH in 2021, sitting comfortably 92-94 MPH across his four starts this year."

Michael Dault - Through The Fence Baseball - Mar. 13th: "Scouts are torn if Hoglund will become a mid-rotation starter or an end-rotation starter. There are even those who think he’s destined for a reliever role."

Kiley McDaniel - ESPN - Feb. 26th: "Hoglund, who went No. 36 overall to Pittsburgh in 2018, was my pick to be drafted higher than consensus because he had everything going for him except for above-average stuff."

R.J. Anderson - CBS Sports - Feb. 15th: "Although Hoglund's fastball often sits in the low-90s, the pitch has boring action that allows it to hop over bats up in the zone. It's possible that some crafty coach or instructor will find a way to milk extra oomph from his fastball."

Carlos Collazo - Baseball America - Jan. 26th: "Hoglund arguably has the best command in the country (he’s walked just 1.8 batters per nine) but scouts would like to see him come out this spring with more typical swing & miss stuff. Hoglund has been up to 96 mph and his fastball plays up, but he’s more typically in the 88-92 mph range."

Ian Smith - Prospects 365 - Nov. 8: "Hides the ball well and shows feel for all his pitches. Could have the best command in class, but the raw stuff doesn’t blow you away."
