Jack Flaherty's Player Profile

Scouts that went and saw 2012 first-round picks Max Fried and Lucas Giolito at Harvard Westlake two years ago also got a look at Flaherty, an infielder with some defensive ability but a questionable hit tool. If required to move to third base.

Flaherty is a smart hitter with good feel at the plate, with a fluid line-drive stroke with little wasted movement. He’s shown a willingness to go the other way, and has shown an ability to hit the ball hard to right field. He doesn’t have good bat speed, however, and his swing doesn’t have very much natural loft so big power numbers are unlikely despite his size.

Right now, Flaherty looks like a shortstop, but with his size he’ll almost assuredly move to third base at the professional level. He’s got soft hands and more than enough arm strength (he also pitches for Harvard-Westlake), but the question is if the bat will play there. If he develops more power the answer is likely yes, but if not he’s more of a utility player.
