Carlos Rodon Scouting Report

Fastball - When Rodon is at his best, his fastball sits in the low-to-mid 90’s and occasionally reaching 96-97. He didn’t throw his heater as much as some scouts would have liked during the 2012 season, but it’s a plus offering that he can throw by hitters who chose to wait on his slider.

Slider - Rodon’s fastball is all the more effective because of his slider, which is the best breaking-ball of any pitcher in this year’s class. It sits in the mid 80’s with ridiculous movement that will give both left and right-handed hitters fits thanks to its bite and speed.

Change – It’s easily the worst of Rodon’s offerings, but it will still flash above-average with decent movement and good arm speed. It generally sits in the low 80’s, and he has enough confidence in the pitch to throw it when both ahead and behind in the count.

Command – While Rodon does repeat his delivery well, he did have a tendency last year to lose command with his fastball and secondary offerings, putting too many men on base via walk for a frontline starting pitcher. He did do a better job of getting ahead of hitters over the summer, however, so we’ll see if that carries over into the spring.
